​It was way back in 1927 when the first dry meter produced in Italy came from the workshops of the "Società Anonima per la Costruzione di Officine Gas". The firm, which was created to cover all the plant and distribution needs of city gas, was able to design, build and completely manage the gas workshops, besides guaranteeing prompt and qualified personnel for maintenance, repair, conversion and adaptation work. 

The first Sacofgas workshop, of about 1,000 sq. meters, stood in open country on the outskirts of Milan, on the provincial road to Genoa beside the Naviglio Pavese. During the following years the workshop was gradually extended both in height and in area until it reached a utilizable production area of about 5,000 sq. meters contained in one single building complex.

​Industries are a bit like human beings: they grow and develop following very precise vocations.

In 1935 when the Società Anonima per la Costruzione di Officine Gas became Sacofgas, it had already chosen its path, which was to concentrate its efforts on gas meters and related instruments.

The change in activity therefore coincides with a precise commitment to specialize in two activities which were parallel and distinct from one another on the organization level. One of these was typified by the planning and construction for equipping unitary blocks within limited periods of time. The other was dedicated to industrial mass production constantly. In other words Sacofgas works for the present but keeps an eye on the future.

Gas production plant and the gasometer are the first but definite premise, temporally and economically, from the supply point of view. Meters are the logical result of the utilization of gas and industrially have an unlimited temporal and economic development, once again from the supply point of view.

In following these two lines of activity, Sacofgas aims at the greatest at the greatest possible specialization which will satisfy both the industrial needs of the market and the commercial requirements caused by an ever increasing use of city gas.

​The first Sacofgas meters, produced under licence from the German industry Kromschröder and Elster underwent changes in the course of time, which affected not only the structure and materials but also the mode of production.

Respecting the trustworthiness and solidity of the first model of German origin, Sacofgas, contributing the proverbial Italian inventiveness and more and more advanced technology, introduced numerous innovations such as deep drawing or the die-cast case. The dry gas meters for both domestic and industrial use exported by Sacofgas all over the world, are the result of a constant search for perfection, an answer to the expectations of the market, which is constantly being up-dated.

The first meters which Sacofgas produced and sold where free chamber models.

They became limited chamber models in 1954.

In the beginning, there was one single 5-burner type. However, already during the fifties 6 types could be counted, having from 10 to 700 burners.

Currently the range was further extended to no less than 10 types, from 10 to 700 burners.

Now, Sacofgas production, in complete accordance with European norms, embraces gas meters and volume correctors.

The new factory building of about 2,500 square meters is finished in the municipality of Città di Castello (Perugia).

This will permit the rationalization of the assembly lines for mass production and also the start of limited batch production of special apparatus.

With the current industrial setup, Sacofgas has a production potential of 200,000 appliances per year.

​​The production of gas meters increases and, in addition to distribution on the Italian national territory, it takes hold throughout the world.

Sacofgas is present with its products not only in Europe but also in Australia, Indonesia, the Middle East and North Africa, wherever gas distribution involves a measurement problem.

The factory is further expanded to exceed 5,000 covered square meters.

The factory ins bigger but also more efficient production, enhanced and made more functional by the automation of processes such as painting, packaging, storage and logistics.

In addition to the production of gas meters, Sacofgas has evolved to develop and consolidate an industrial plan that contributes to the decarbonisation of the planet.
